There's just less than a week from the IAEA board meeting on Nov, 24 to decide on Iran's possible referral to the UN security council. However the general atmosphere in the world is quite against Iran. Just yesterday the UN General Assembly passed a resolution expressing "serious concern" about human rights violations in Iran. The IAEA chief's report on Iran describes "unclear issues" regarding P2 centrifuges. Meanwhile the world media is launching President Ahmadinejad's comments that Israel should be wiped off the map over and over again. Some bogus reports say that Iran has given UN documents that include bomb part instructions and New York Time makes a fuss of an amazing laptop with plans of bombs stolen from Iran! What all this means in one word? "Our arch foes do not even wait for us to make a mistake".
In this situation Iran does not have many cards to count on while preparing for the IAEA meeting. The last resolution against Iran in the Atomic Energy Agency was approved with 22 votes against Iran and only one single vote from Venezuela in our favor. Now the scenario written by our analysts as the best guess is that any draft in the UN security council against Iran may be vetoed by Russia who is a veto-wielding member of the Security Council. Is this a correct analysis? Can a country's future be decided upon just by guesswork? What are the facts in an objective point of view?
Probably the correct question to be answered regarding Russia's Iran policy is why Russia is supporting us? The following is a list of possible major reasons behind Russia's partial support of Iran:
Russia is prepared to receive billions of dollars from Iran in providing Iran's needs for nuclear energy.
Russia is planning to make this a live sample for other countries who wish the nuclear energy and get their dollars too.
Russia is trying to survive as a key player in the region with little cards left in hand.
It does not take a genius to guess that our relationship with Russia is more based on trade benefits. But is this enough to rely on? Certainly not, because South Korea for instance, one of the biggest suppliers of Iran's thirsty import market voted against Iran too. When it comes to money politics no country wants to lose US as a friend and becoming it's enemy. Pentagon still has a huge propaganda machine and it's not limited to VOA. So the situation is quite clear. Iran has to play the game with the rules and not let the last tango happen in Kremlin rather than in Paris!
Sometimes facts do not turn out to be in our favor. Currently the pressure over Iran over it's nuclear activities is more political than having a legal basis. But it should be admitted that Russians have followed a more reliable path in their policies towards Iran than other friendly looking countries such as India. Vladimir Putin was the first high ranking foreign government representative to congratulate Ahmadinejad after he won the elections and this is not a world to live in alone. We definitely need friends even if they just want our money! The Russian proposal that any spent fuel rod be sent back to Russia found enough acceptance and seems to be a working option and their plan that would allow us to covert uranium under the condition that we move the enrichment process to a facility to be built for Iran in Russia is for us to decide on. Lets look at it the bright side and take advantage of the merits of thinking positive :
