Tehran gets high on smoke

An early winter has arrived in most parts of Iran Thickening the thick layer of smoke that had already covered the city of Tehran. Air pollution is a phenomenon that creates varieties of problems for the residents of big cities. Once a city of gorgeous gardens and  streams of water flowing down from the Alborz mountain, the modern Tehran is an ugly city of high crime, high traffic and high pollution. Reportedly %47.12 of the air pollution is blamed on private vehicles. %25.28 on light trucks and %20.00 on motorcycles. Most polluters are due to inefficient burning of fossil fuels filling the air with CO, CO2. HO, SO2 and many other poisonous chemical elements such as Mercury and lead. Adding the dust and such particles from tires and  other moving parts reveals the fact that these good looking means of transportation have a devilish nature. Air pollution creates numerous  health hazards such as cardiac, respiratory and digestion problems but it also causes neural and mental diseases too.

People from rural area keep migrating towards big cities in hope of finding jobs and a better life. The past governments did not seem to have a long term plan (what's that). Although only %0.75 of this pollution belongs to public transportation buses, their situation is not getting any better due to the fact that streets are overpopulated with cars and the government pays huge subsidies on gas. Like other state interventions in the economy, these actions have been destabilizing the economy. There are certain organizations and institutions that recognize the incoming disaster and acknowledge the fact that a systematic change should be started to avoid a social explosion. But on the other hand there are mafia style profiteers that axe most efforts made by the new government.

In conclusion, there's a new plan to create double tariffs for gas. Scheduled for April, gas purchase cards will be issued holding quota for each vehicle. The owner then has to pay an extra fee for the extra gas he's using. No more comments. This is Tehran, the smoggy capital of Iran.
