Turkcell adopts Irancell
Turkcell, Turkey's biggest mobile phone operator, said that it had signed an agreement with Iran to set up the first Iranian private mobile phone network called Irancell.
This paves the way to provide higher quality wireless services to Iranians. The consortium of Iranian and foreign partners signed an agreement in which Turkcell has a %49 share. Irancell is primarily planned to provide 12 million cellular phones at a 150,000 Tomans cost (approx. $165) The wireless market in Iran has been under the state monopoly that led to high prices, black market and low quality services. After skimming the market for years, Taliya was recently introduced as a prepaid phone service which brought together technical issues. The Turkcell deal was in debate for 2 years because of the size of the agreement and also national security issues. The state plans to let a third operator enter the market in 2 years.
