Abbas Mirza Attacks Russians

Jul, 28, 1826 AD

A Persian Café : Painting by Lord Edwin (1849-1903)In a provocative move, the Russians advanced in Erivan and occupied some localities to which Iranians protested and the ambassador sent to Saint Petersburg to discuss the issue was detained by Russians in Tbilisi. Abbas Mirza struck on July, 28 and succeeded at first. As Persian troops were approaching Tbilisi, another corps advanced along the Caspian shore. But the army led by Mohammad Mirza was defeated and Abbas Mirza's troops were badly beaten near Ganjeh.
Iran's newly modernized army was indeed no match for the Russians who were technologically superior and had better established chain of command and logistics. The war was short and the outcome was decisive. The treaty of Turkmenchai signed on Feb, 22, 1828 actually sealed the previous Gulistan treaty. Iran thus lost Erivan and Nakhjevan and accepted to pay 20 million Rubles in damage to Russia which was a great some. Iran was thus bullied into giving up Transcaucasia and pay tribute to Russian for trying to defend its territory. It's not exactly known what really went on behind the scenes but it is certain that the Qajar kings were champions in losing territory, and they would sacrifice almost anything at the cost the nation.
