Order Restored In Darband

Jul, 5, 527 AD

Embossed Bird and Ram Sassanid 4-6 ADGhobad I of Sassanid dynasty repelled Khazars to the other side of the Volga river. After clearing the Caucasia from nomadic tribes, reconstruction of the city of Darband was started. His son, Khosrau Anoushirvan was assigned as the supervisor for the fortification project including walls as tall as 20 meters and 30 towers. Darband used to be a very important strategic point since Achaemenids: Dariush the great mentions Darband in the Behistun Inscription. The garrison stationed here was a strong point used many times to counter the nomadic attacks from north. For a long time, the Roman empire shared the military expenses in Darband because migration of tribes such as Avars, Khazars, Huns, etc endangered civilian lives in Europe. The border guards sometimes acted independently. After the Caliph invasion and fall of the Sassanids, Darband units maintained their position until the Safavi dynasty. Their great resistance against invading Arab army in 728 is commemorated by a cemetery named as "40 heroes". (Updated: Jan, 23, 2009)
